The most serious current threat to the Jewish world and our social cohesion comes from the left, not the right.
Those who advocate and practise diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and critical race theory (CRT) are leftists who tout their “progressiveness” and see their movement as noble. This movement is identity politics on steroids and it is everywhere — in schools, universities, institutions and government bureaucracies. What is happening on our campuses and in our streets is a direct result of it. Surveys show that antisemitism is now highest among young people and those who identify as progressive leftists are the ones who are out marching.
CRT and DEI have deeply divided our society, thanks to their emboldened progressive proponents. We are no longer individuals; we have become only members of our collective identity and this perspective has contributed to the surge in antisemitism.
The left has mainstreamed and normalized antisemitism far more successfully than the right ever did.
The examples are everywhere: The NDP, the Liberal Party’s left wing, the left wing of the Democrats, the far-left squad of the House Democratic caucus, Brazil under Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Sir Keir Starmer and the British Labour Party, along with its former leader Jeremy Corbyn, and the union movement in Canada — leftists all.
CRT and DEI not only exclude Jews but are weaponized against them. Donald Trump’s decisive victory is partly an electoral pushback against this mindset — just look at how young men and Latinos voted in the U.S. election.
Too many people mislabel CRT and DEI as “ enlightened progressivism” and the results have been disastrous.
