Demand Made to TDSB: Stop Geopolitical Ideology of Our Children

CAEF was pleased to participate in the Tafsik organized protest outside the Toronto District School Board offices, on September 25th, responding to the inappropriate and misleading field trip to what turned out to be an anti-Israel protest.

Here is a message from our Hindu allies

Michael Teper, VP of CAEF, spoke at the rally outside TDSB’s head office, demanding action and calling for the identification of teachers and others responsible for putting Jewish and other children into the anti-Israel march on September 18. In his speech, Michael Teper announced that CAEF is offering up to $10,000 for information that will lead to disciplinary action by the Ontario Teachers College (OCT) for any individual responsible for this inappropriate, antisemitic, diversion from educational objectives to making children participate in a hostile political ploy.

Send your information in confidence to reporting@caef.ca

Much pressure was immediately brought to bear on Minister of Education Jill Dunlop and Premier Doug Ford. Original statements of disappointment were inadequate and a call for the TDSB to review itself, self-defeating. In the past day and a half, there has been a change and there will now be an independent investigation.

Successful Symposium: Woke Antisemitism, What it is and How to Fight it

On September 22, CAEF, the Jewish Institute for Liberal Values and Canadians for Israel, held a stimulating, high-level, action-packed symposium featuring almost a dozen expert speakers. They covered a range of topics, beginning with an overview on woke or social justice ideology and its implications for all of society today. Mother-and-son team, journalists and authors Barbara and Jonathan Kay carried out a riveting conversation with founder and director of JILV, David Bernstein, author of Woke Antisemitism, How Progressive Ideology Harms Jews.

Over 200 participants from across the Jewish community heard from experts on three panels dealing with the legal ramifications of this radical ideology, and how woke ideology fuels antisemitism and extremism in K-12 and in universities. All panels were recorded and the videos will be posted and shared widely.

Key Messages:

Courage is contagious and Jews of all ages, including young students, must stand proud, be courageous in this fight against antisemitism and not cower before those trying to silence them or mislead others by spreading lies and disinformation.

Using the law is a right and brings might, and various legal remedies are available. Seek legal advice, don’t withdraw or refuse to report incidents of discrimination or abuse. Get an opinion and then act on it if there is a valid case. Evidence is important.

Teachers are afraid to speak out and can be disciplined if they bring a complaint against another teacher or administration. Parents must speak out.

“No More Antisemitism”: A Series in Hamilton, Ontario

In partnership with the Hamilton Jewish Federation, CAEF organized an evening program for the Hamilton Jewish community on  September 22, with the co-sponsorship of Tafsik and Canadians for Israel. First in a series of talks, Andria Spindel moderated the conversation with David Bernstein and Dr. Michael Poliakoff, on the topic of “The New Antisemitism,” which presented and dissected woke antisemitism, the theme of Bernstein’s 2022 book.

Introduced by Gustavo Rymberg, president and CEO of the Hamilton Jewish Federation, the speakers were warmly welcomed by an audience that was clearly engaged. This topic is of great concern to the Jewish community of approximately 5,000 who see everyday occurrences of antisemitism at every grade level and at McMaster University, which is among Canada’s most prestigious universities.

All three guests encouraged folks to be courageous and mutually supportive, to work with the Federation to document incidents and to prepare their children with solid information about Jewish history and the facts about Israel that are being distorted by antisemites.

While this was intended to be an in-person event, we are very grateful to Brig. General Amir Avivi and Moshe Davis for quickly switching to virtual in order to bring their important briefing to Canadians who were eager to hear from the General. We understand that the situation on the Northern Front required that their plans changed, and we look forward to seeing them in Toronto in late October.

One State’s Response to Toxic DEI in Education

In light of the Woke Antisemitism Symposium, CAEF is monitoring actions across the continent that address DEI, especially how it is affecting K-12 and university programs, activities, and hostilities towards Jews and allies. The Hindu community is equally opposed to DEI and geopolitical ideology in the classroom.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt ordered universities to stop funding DEI. He said that he is "taking the politics" out of education by ordering universities to cut taxpayer-funded diversity, equity and inclusion positions. Stitt’s executive order also bans the universities from mandating DEI training and disclosure of personal pronouns.

The article reports controversy and criticism around this executive order but lays out concerns about how DEI has itself increased discrimination.

The UN Conveniently Forgets Terrorism Against Jews

Is there any moral clarity and focus on justice remaining within the UN and its many institutions, commissions, councils and committees? Judging by the actions and decisions of once-esteemed bodies and of Secretary General AntónioGuterres himself, perhaps not.

It cannot be that UN women simply did not believe Jewish women were raped on October 7, 2023, and that UNRWA has but a few miscreants who work with Hamas, or that the ICC is simply seeking justice in an unjust war when it goes after Israel which is defending itself from terrorism on multiple fronts. There is sufficient evidence of bias and blatant antisemitism to make one ask if the UN has any purpose anymore.

Read the JNS article about the UN exhibit memorializing terror victims that ignored Jewish victims of terror completely.

Watch Israel’s former ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, explaining the injustice shown in this UN exhibit:

The UN’s usefulness must now be questioned and its purpose revisited.

UNRWA Funding Before the Courts

CAEF has long proposed terminating federal funds to UNRWA or withholding them until a major cleanup of their toxic education system is completed and independently verified.

Read the report from CIJA on how such accountability is proceeding through the Canadian courts.

Ottawa, ON – September 12, 2024 – Yesterday, the Federal Court rejected the government’s motion to dismiss the application for judicial review of the Government of Canada’s decision to resume funding for the controversial United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The Honourable Madam Justice McVeigh rejected the Government’s arguments that the Minister of International Development’s decision was not reviewable by the courts or that the enabling statutes did not constrain his decision.

This means that the application by Dikla Mizrachi, mother of Ben Mizrachi; Iris Liniado, daughter of Judih Weinstein Haggai; Jacqui Vital, mother of Adi Vital-Kaploun; Raquel Ohnona, mother of Alexandre Look; together with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) to have the March 8, 2024, decision by the Minister of International Development to resume UNRWA funding declared unreasonable will proceed before the Federal Court.

CAEF is working with the Bedein Center for Near East Policy Research on a project that will enlighten decision-makers, educators, the media and the general public on the terrorism taught to Palestinian Arab children, in school and in summer camps. The latest film by the BCNEPR was made this summer and fully demonstrates the hatred towards Jews, and the terror training.

Watch for news of a film showing a presentation on the use of UNRWA facilities by Hamas and textbooks that teach kids to kill. A grant from Maspik-JNF (dual logo here) is enabling the launch and distribution of this critical material in Israel, Canada and abroad.

A Major Win for Jewish Community—Reporting of Incidents on Campus

CIJA reported a major win, a step forward in holding universities and colleges accountable. For some time, we have needed standardized definitions, data collection, reporting and consequences for antisemitic incidents.

Here are excerpts from the CIJA bulletin:

Ontario Bill 166, known as the Strengthening Accountability and Student Supports Act, was passed in June. This landmark legislation marks a crucial step forward in addressing racism and hate on Ontario’s postsecondary campuses.

….one key section (20-4), which empowers the Minister to issue a directive to create standards for the implementation of reporting mechanisms for hate related incidents, had yet to be enacted.

….newly appointed Minister of Colleges and Universities Nolan Quinn issued his directive to universities and colleges, effective immediately. The directive aims to create a safer, more inclusive campus environment by setting clear standards for handling incidents of hate and racism.

Understanding the Facts About the Israel-Hamas War, Not the Lies

John Spencer, an urban warfare expert, has spoken and written about Israel’s defensive war with Hamas and defended Israel’s actions, pointing out that Israel, above all other countries, follows the rule of law, the rules of war, and does more to protect civilians within its enemy’s population, even providing aid that is not warranted or required. Israel is losing the popularity contest but it is winning the war.

The One-State Solution. Is it Best for Israelis and Palestinians?

There can be no more controversial phrase than “one state,” the phrase most often associated with the stated aim of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority to eliminate Israel. Neither organization recognizes the State of Israel and both are determined to create a singular state of Palestine. In all their documentation and rhetoric, there is no evidence of support for two states, despite the fact many Western nations, NGOs, media outlets and political pundits press the notion that two states is the only solution for peace in the Middle East, meaning peace for Israel.

Several years ago, Caroline Glick came out with the proposal for one unitary Jewish state, and Dr. Mordechai Kedar frequently writes and teaches about the concept of one Jewish state with multiple Palestinian emirates, so this is not a new notion.

CAEF is not endorsing this idea but is sharing a lucid article that lays out the issues, and a framework for a one-state solution that the author states is in the best interests of Jews and Arabs.

This is an essay written by Nachum Kaplan of Moral Clarity, published by Future of Jewish on August 30, 2024.

The so-called two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an ignorant idea.

We should be looking at other options. Unfortunately, the antisemitic double standard that plagues discourse about Israel always derails the discussion.

While the real obstacle to peace — which is Islamism and a Palestinian refusal to live with and/or alongside Jews, cannot be solved easily — the constitutional arrangements are not as unsolvable as supposed.

Obviously, it should be one state, Israel, with some degree of Palestinian self-governance. The fine print would need to be negotiated.

CAEF Deeply Appreciates Support from CoHNA

The Coalition of Hindus of North America is a strong ally of the Jews, supporting Israel, demanding justice and calling out the animus expressed against the Jewish state on the streets of Canada.

After an egregious, unethical, teacher-organized field trip that misled parents, students and some teachers into believing that children were simply to observe an Indigenous people’s demonstration about an historic issue. Families were not told that children would be led into participating in an anti-Israel protest. All policies of the Toronto District School Board, previously posted, requiring parental approval for kids to go on a field trip, and only after honest information about the trip was provided, were violated. An investigation is underway.

Minister of Education Jill Dunlop has expressed “disappointment” and stated that TDSB was investigating the situation.

CAEF is calling for an independent investigation and more explicit condemnation from the Minister.

Below is the social media post from CoHNA, the headline from the Toronto Sun on this story.
